Week 3: January 23 - 29

Moderators: Daniela & Letizia

Exploring Models & Theories

Participants will explore and discuss tools that support and supplant theories and models.

Your tasks for Week 3:

  • Compare theories and models
  • Explore and discuss tools that support and supplant theories and models in Moodle (week 3 forum)
  • Take part in a TappedIn.org interactive, virtual field trip on Saturday or Sunday.  (Details below)
  • Take a survey on PLE theories and models

In summary, we have three opportunities to learn about the PLN, TappedIn.org: advanced, basic, and independent virtual tours.  Moreover, you can view the calendar on TappedIn to see more tours provided weekly.   Read the TappedIn User Interface Guide to prepare yourself.  Here's an excerpt from a fellow Webhead, Teresa Almeida D'Eca, on the use of TappedIn as a PLN.

(Source: Online Communication Tools That Promote Language Learning and Foster Professional Development.  Polifonia, 7, 81-92. )

Excerpt: “Tapped Inis a multi-user virtual environment (MUVE), a text-only chat platform that is "the online workplace of an international community of education professionals. K-12 teachers and librarians, professional development staff, teacher education faculty and students, and researchers engage in professional development programs and informal collaborative activities with colleagues". You can log in as a guest or member. Signing up for free membership implies completing a simple form and getting your password by email.

Services provided by Tapped In include a 'real-time' twelve-hour help desk service, technical support via email, and several 'Tours and Tips' sessions every month led by very friendly helpdesk staff. If you become a member, you have privileges such as:

▪ the opportunity to have your personal office in cyberspace where you can meet with students and colleagues,

▪ the possibility to attend or run online presentations, seminars and courses,

▪ the ability to join or create and manage a special-interest group,

▪ threaded discussion boards in every room,

▪ automatic email of the log of each session you participate in,

▪ access to a database of the transcripts of numerous activities (sessions, meetings, seminars, etc.) that will be sent directly to your email box through a click of your mouse, and,

▪ subscription to the monthly newsletter, On the Tapis.”
